Lochaline Native Oyster Project (LNOP)

Status: Ongoing (2022–present)
Partners: NatureScot Nature Restoration Fund, Ardtornish Estate, Local Volunteers

The Lochaline Native Oyster Project is a multi-year initiative to restore native European oysters (Ostrea edulis) to Lochaline.

The project combines hatchery and nursery systems with hands-on community involvement to rebuild oyster reefs, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen local stewardship of marine habitats.

Activities include:

  • Spat production and reef restoration
  • Biodiversity monitoring
  • Volunteer training
  • Community outreach and education

LNOP contributes directly to Scotland’s wider native oyster restoration efforts and supports long-term ecosystem recovery within the MPA.
